Tasty Tuesday’s: Apple Crisp

Now that it’s officially Fall, I thought I share a super easy Fall recipe! This is one of my FAVORITE go to desserts for Fall time! A few years ago, we had dinner at a friend’s place, and she had made an apple crisp for dessert. I was never a super fan of warm apples for some reason, but the older I get the more I love them! I’ve tried adding a few different things to the recipe to kind of make it my own, and my family loves it just the same!

When I make it, I make it in an 8×8 pan or a little smaller simply because I don’t like to have a bunch of leftovers. You can easily double this recipe and make it in a 13×9 pan if you have a larger family or guest over.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray the bottom of an 8×8 pan with an even coat of cooking spray. Set aside.

Peel and slice 5 apples. I like using organic red or yellow apples as they aren’t too sweet or tart. You are going to be adding sugar to this recipe and apples can be pretty sweet by themselves. You could use Honeycrisp or Pink Lady if you want something even sweeter or green apples to make it more tart, but like I said I prefer a red or yellow. For this organic Fuji apples were on sale and weren’t too sweet so they were perfect!

Put the apple slices in a medium bowl with a couple squeezes of lemon juice. This allows the apples not to brown quickly.

Sprinkle white sugar and  cinnamon on the apples and mix together.

Let that sit while you make the topping mixture.

Cover a small microwave safe bowl with a paper towel and melt on stick of butter. Dice the butter in smaller pieces before placing in the bowl. Start with 45 seconds, and do 25 seconds in increments afterwards until melted.

Pour rolled oats, packed brown sugar, flour, nutmeg, a pinch of apple pie spice, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Mix together until blended.

Pour melted butter into mixture, coating it.

Pour apples into greased pan.

Pour the topping mixture on top of the apples. Press flat.

Place in oven and cook for about 30 minutes until the top is crisp and golden.

Serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup if you really want to indulge! Devour and enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 5 apples (red is best in my opinion)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp white sugar
  • 1 Cup rolled oats
  • 1 stick of butter (melted)
  • 1 Cup light brown sugar
  • 1 Cup flour (you can use wheat if you want)
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of Apple Pie Spice
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray the bottom of an 8×8 pan with an even coat of cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Peel and slice 5 apples.
  3. Place the apple slices in a medium bowl with a couple squeezes of lemon juice.
  4. Sprinkle white sugar and cinnamon on the apples and mix together. Let that sit while you make the topping mixture.
  5. Dice butter in small pieces and melt in a microwave safe bowl. Make sure to cover it as butter will splash everywhere if in too long.
  6. Mix rolled oats, packed brown sugar, flour, nutmeg, a pinch of apple pie spice, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.
  7. Pour melted butter onto mixture, coating it. Mix together.
  8. Put apples in baking pan.
  9. Place the topping mixture on top of the apples. Press flat.
  10. Cook in oven for about 30 minutes until the top is crisp and golden.
  11. Serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup if you really want to indulge! Devour and enjoy!

*Remember you can double this recipe for a bigger crowd. Also, the topping is the best part so feel free to make more of the topping – you can never have too much of it! 🙂

Much love,

Chef Charley
